As part of our Titanic topic P6/7 were challenged to make a lifeboat from 1 piece of tinfoil. We discussed how to make the challenge fair and then the pupils had 10 minutes to create their lifeboat. We floated each boat in turn and counted the number of passengers (1p coins) it could carry before sinking. We were able to see first-hand that a bigger lifeboat was better and learnt about how ships float even though they are heavy. We then created a bar chart with our results, just like real scientists working with data.
